Johannes Cornelisz Verspronck, Andries Stilte as a Standard Bearer, 1640, oil on canvas
My video reimagines Andreas Silty as a Standard-Bearer through the concept of wardrobe as identity. In a slow, atmospheric sequence, blending moving image and still photography the camera records a quiet ritual of preparation, lingering on hands brushing silk, lifting lace into light, fastening gloves, and layering tailored garments. Soft shadows, close detail shots, and subtle movement transform dressing into a ritual of self-fashioning, where each choice becomes a gesture of power, vulnerability, masculinity, and femininity. The subject remains intentionally ambiguous. In the final moments, the figure steps onto a studio photo set, illuminated by dramatic lighting, where I capture a single contemporary portrait that echoes the historic pose and reinterprets the painting’s context through a modern narrative. The final frame of the film is the reimagined photography portrait highlighting both masculinity and femininity.
