Lloyd uses butterflies as the subject matter to create a work that lives somewhere between the figurative and abstract. To create “Untitled (Purple Swarm)”, he utilized hundreds of die-cut butterflies using monochromatic cardstock paper. The paper butterflies appear to be suspended, as if frozen mid-flight. The optical effect was created by alternating layers of die-cut butterflies. This piece was inspired by the transformative symbolism of butterflies.
