“Swarm” is a composition of hundreds of butterflies die-cut from a paperback book on artist Henri Matisse. Lloyd uses butterflies as the subject matter to create a work that lives somewhere between the figurative and abstract. The paper butterflies appear to be suspended, as if frozen mid-flight. The optical effect was created by alternating layers of die-cut butterflies and sheets of transparent plexiglass. This piece was inspired by the transformative symbolism of butterflies.
