Hundreds of paper butterflies die-cut from a paperback copy of “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland,” by Lewis Carroll. Lloyd uses butterflies as the subject matter to create a work that lives somewhere between the figurative and abstract. The paper butterflies appear to be suspended, as if frozen mid-flight. The optical effect was created by alternating layers of die-cut butterflies and sheets of transparent plexiglass. This piece was inspired by the transformative symbolism of butterflies, also a central theme in Lewis Carroll’s timeless story.
